Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, Special Edition Review

Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, Special Edition (PC, 2010)

I really loved the first one. That said, this second one is relatively disappointing. The story this time revolves around finding "the Big Whoop", a great treasure supposedly buried by a great pirate. You're tasked with completing a map and general mayhem around the islands. The humor is not as great and the puzzles were tedious / frustrating at times. I didn't really like the minigame aspect of many of them towards the middle of the game. And even though I got stuck a few times, I was really smart to unbind the hint key from the beginning, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to resist using it.

The game did have some enjoyable moments when I was able to figure out what it wanted me to do after some long, iterative try-and-fail cycles. I feel that point-and-click adventure games like these might actually be fun group activities if they were a little bit shorter, since some of the wackier solutions might come out sooner if you had more people around to discuss with. Sometimes I just got lucky clicking on things that I didn't really think through just because I had no other options.

Overall, Monkey Island 2 is a tad above average, but people who liked the first should definitely consider playing this sequel. The ending is a bit amusing and I looked forward to another installment.

Completion Time: 6 hours 56 minutes.
Rating: 6.5 out of 10.
Final Words:: I hope LucasArts considers re-releasing the 3rd and 4th games as well since I do enjoy the series, but I somehow doubt it will happen.
